OBAMA COMES VILLAGE

:US President Barack Obama said he will come to Indonesia in November. This was conveyed yesterday in his speech at the United Nations’ General Session, whose theme was the success of democracy in the world.

According to Obama, the development of democracy in the world was not at the dictation of the US, but because every citizen demanded it. He also said democracy always reflects the uniqueness of a nation.

Then Obama mentioned he planned to visit India at the end of the fall season. “I will continue my official trip to Indonesia, a country with the most number of Muslims in the world which has connected thousands of its islands through its representative government and civil society,” Obama said. On the same official trip, he will attend the G-20 Conference in South Korea and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Japan.

The US President has long planned to visit Indonesia where he spent part of his childhood, but the plan was postponed twice in May and June. The first one was because of the urgency of the health legislation in the US Congress, and the second time was because of the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa welcomed the plan but refused to comment about whether or not Obama’s trip was due to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s absence at the US-ASEAN Conference in New York on September 24. “Ask the US,” Marty said.
